Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Herman Arbas is believed to have disappeared sometime between mid October 2000 and the spring of 2001. He was last seen at his residence in the vicinity of the 1300 block of County Route 10 in Laurens, Otsego County, New York. No one has seen him since. He was only reported missing in early May 2005 by a "concerned citizen" who knew him.
Police are treating his disappearance as suspicious. Three search warrants were executed on his property, a 384-acre farm, including two ponds, but despite extensive searches, no traces of him have been found. At the time he disappeared, Arbas ran a dairy farm with his son, Matthew Arbas, who resided with him. Neighbors told investigators that his son had told them Arbas had become a truck driver but investigators found no evidence of that.
He had been running the farm since his father's disappearance before selling the last family herd and getting out of the dairy business in 2004. Herman Arbas has been divorced for about ten years from his wife. Arbas' relatives informed police that it was not uncommon that Arbas avoided contact with them for extended periods of time.
