Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Arias was last seen in the company of her mother, Guadalupe Barajas Castro, on November 26, 2001 when the two left Longview for a shopping trip in Vancouver with Castro's estranged husband, Gregorio Arias Ibal.
When they were last seen, Guadalupe was pregnant and may have since given birth.
The vehicle in which they were traveling was later found abandoned at a relativeís house in Kerman, California but they have not been seen or heard from since and are missing under suspicious circumstances.
Arias Ibalís relatives in Mexico claim that Ibal and his sister, Regina Arias Ibal, also are missing, but police say the relatives have never filed missing persons reports for either sibling. In the year before the disappearance, Arias Ibal took Lizzy for a short, planned visit to see family in Mexico, and kept her there for six months.
After the disappearance police alerted hospitals and border authorities in Arizona and California to keep an eye out for the family. They started flier campaigns, distributed photos of the mother and daughter and consulted with the Mexican consulate and Mexican law enforcement.
Police say it is possible that Guadalupe voluntarily cut her ties and left town. But while her husband did not have legal residence and frequently moved between Mexico and the U.S., Guadalupe and Lizzy were American citizens. Guadalupe was employed and involved with friends, family and their Pentecostal church. And she was extremely close to her sister.
No suspects have been named, and Lizzy and Guadalupe remain listed as missing persons, rather than crime victims. Castro's father believes his daughter was murdered, but that Lizzie may be living in the Mexican states of Jalisco or Nayarit.
