  • Details of Disappearance
    Betty is missing with her husband, Louis Balas, and they were last seen on December 13, 1980, in Los Angeles, CA. They were discovered missing when neighbors became concerned because their front door was left open.

    Police found the Balas' television set on and the bathtub full. Nothing was missing from the home, including Balas' nitroglycerin pills, which he takes for heart trouble. There were no signs of a struggle.

    The couple's 1978 Cadillac was found the next day, about seven miles away.

    Balas was scheduled to testify against Larry Eugene Boyce, a convicted killer who was charged with 14 felonies, including the 1978 kidnapping and robbery of Balas. In 1978 Boyce allegedly jumped Balas and tried to kidnap him in an underground parking garage at a local bank. Balas was allegedly forced to go to a bank and cash a check.

    Boyce was found guilty of kidnaping for purpose of robbery in 1982, and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

    Louis and Betty Balas was never located.
