Details of Disappearance
Barrett resided in the Orange Park Acres area of Orange County, California. She was last seen on April 11, 2002. She missed several appointments with real estate salespeople and failed to report to her classes by the time her disappearance was reported to authorities.
Barrett's forest green 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with California license plates 3STH532 has never been recovered.
In 1997, Gayle retained a family law attorney who filed a petition for dissolution of the marriage. A month later Gayle asked the attorney to put the matter on hold. Gayle confided in her sister, revealing she was afraid to go ahead with the divorce because her husband had threatened her, saying Ill murder you and bury you in that desert and they will never find you. In March 2002, Gayle decided to proceed with the dissolution action. On March 16, 2002, she met with her family law attorney and signed an amended dissolution petition. On April 8, 2002, the family law attorney moved for leave to file the amended dissolution petition. Investigators believe foul play may have been involved in Barrett's case.
