  • Details of Disappearance
Robert Bennett left the Whittier Narrows Plant for the Los Angeles County Sanitation on February 16, 1983 at 1030 a.m. He was en route to the Los Angeles County Rubber Company in Los Angeles but never arrived.

The investigation revealed this case to be a homicide although Bennett's remains were never recovered. The remains were allegedly dumped at the Puente Hills Landfill.

John Alcantara of Downey was found guilty of first-degree murder in the case. Alcantara wasn't arrested until 2005, when sheriff's detectives got new information.

Alcantara was a gardener on a maintenance crew and Bennett was his supervisor. A poor performance review which prevented Alcantara from getting a promotion led him to shoot Bennett in the head. They had argued the day before when Bennett said Alcantara wasn't "foreman material."

Bennett's blood was found near tire tracks identified as being from his truck and a dump truck. Blood also was discovered on a shovel and in a dump truck that went to the landfill.
