Details of Disappearance
A construction worker called for help after he said he saw Bush covered in blood and later noticed her car on the side of the canyon road. He tried to stop to help her near callbox 3 along Highway 178 (which is about halfway up the canyon route between Bakersfield and the Kern River Valley) but she got in her car and drove away. Search and Rescue crews followed a blood trail on some brush that led into the Kern River, about a hundred yards down a hillside where they believed she may have gone into the water. Deputies went to Bush's home with her husband, who was coming back from work when the search began. There they said they found a bloody kitchen knife, but no signs anyone else was involved in the incident. According to fellow volunteers, Bush had cut back on volunteer hours at both a local hospital and senior center due to migraine headaches and some depression.
