  • Details of Disappearance
    Gladys Conklin was last seen on January 9, 1982. She walked out the front door of her home in San Lorenzo and has never been seen since. Neighbors reported that they hadn't seen Gladys for 24 hours before her reported disappearance. Her husband reported that is 79- year-old wife no longer had control of her mind. She wandered away so often, he reported, that he finally padlocked the front gate. On this day, however, he had taken a nap and forgotten the lock; now, she was nowhere to be found.

    She was an author of 27 children's books on nature and science. Gladys, who had a bachelor's degree in library science, helped open a new Hayward library, then became its first children's librarian in 1950.
