Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Cottrell resided at the Southridge Nursing Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A relative dropped her off at the facility during the early evening hours of May 26, 2001 family said she was in a good mood. For some reason, she turned around after her family had driven away and left the facility at approximately 6:30 PM. Authorities believe that she left of her own accord. A witness saw her take off west across Center Street.
A fisherman discovered Cottrell's purse along the banks of the Iowa River several weeks after she was reported missing. Her identification and cash were inside the handbag.
She had family camping at Riverview Park, police deduced that maybe she was trying to reach them and decided to search the area. They fear she was looking for her family, and somehow fell into the Iowa River which was running high and fast at the time.
