Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Becky Doisy was lasst seen on August 5, 1976 in Columbia, Missouri. She was a former University of Missouri student and worked as a waitress at Ernie’s Steakhouse at the time. Her sister filed a missing person report after Becky didn’t show up for work and was not at her apartment. Police scoured rural areas around Columbia on foot and on horseback with no result.
It was a missing persons case until 1985, when two of Johnny Wright’s friends came forward, telling the police that Wright had bragged about killing Doisy. Wright's former roommate told Columbia police he had seen Doisy's body in Wright's car. Becky had been having a drink at Columbia’s Heidelberg restaurant with Wright just before she went missing. Later that same night Doisy was supposed to hang out with her old high school sweetheart, but did not show up. It was at Ernie's Restaurant that Becky first met Wright. He had been bothering her at work, trying to get her to go out with him. Finally, Becky agreed to have a drink with Wright. She was never seen again. Wright was questioned, but later released due to a lack of evidence.
Nine years after Doisy went missing, police had enough information to issue a warrant for Wright’s arrest.
Wright was not arrested until 2009. He had fled to Georgia, living under the name "Errol Edwards" from 1981 to 2007. After years without information, Wright applied for a job with his real name in 2009. A background check showed he was wanted in Missouri for Doisy’s murder. In 2011, the jury found Wright guilty of second-degree murder, and he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Wright had served less than four years in prison when he died.
Police have exhumed several bodies in search of Doisy's remains, including from a Crystal City cemetery in 1979 and a northern Boone County root cellar 11 years later. She has not been located.
