    forehead. Her nickname is "Rita." She was born in the former Yugoslavia. Aferdita's last name is pronounced "Ger-Jl."


  • Details of Disappearance
    Aferdita told her sister that she planned to meet Binak Gjergja her abusive ex-husband and their children in the parking lot of Showcase Cinemas in Auburn Hills, Michigan at 7:00 PM on February 25, 2001. Aferdita has never been heard from again. Her Escort was discovered abandoned inside the Showcase Cinemas' lot shortly after her disappearance. Her cellular phone and purse were inside the car, along with an unused round from her handgun. The weapon has never been recovered.
    Binak fled the United States and returned to Kosovo shortly afterwards. Authorities located him in April 2002 and charged himin connection with an assault against Aferdita that occured in 1998. Binak may never be extradited from the former Yugoslavia as the result of international laws. He is the prime suspect in Aferdita's presumed murder.
    When Binak fled the United States he abandoned his two small children. The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office terminated his parental rights in a trial before Oakland County Circuit Judge John J. McDonald.
