Details of Disappearance
Anwar was last seen in Newark, New Jersey on January 19, 1999.
Rahim Martin had asked his best friend Anwar Green to accompany him from their Hillside neighborhood to a Newark bank where Martin could cash an insurance check he received for injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
The last image of them comes from a surveillance tape taken at a Newark bank.
The tape shows the pair leaving Independence Community Bank at Broad and Academy streets.
They briefly stopped next door at the Prudential Building on Broad Street, where Martin once worked as a guard for a private security firm.
From the lobby Martin dialed his uncle, who worked at Prudential. They talked briefly by telephone.
The teens then left without seeing him.
They may have had a large amount of cash with them. Neither Green nor Martin had driver's licenses and they often relied on others for rides.
Green had a credit card with him but never used it. He'd left his cell phone at home.
Relatives and friends said Green and Martin were close to their families and were unlikely to vanish without leaving word.
The day after they were reported missing, the bodies of two individuals were found in a burned house in Newark.
The victims had been murdered and the house intentionally set on fire. One of the victims was identified as Martin in August 2010. The other body remains unidentified.
