Grimes was last seen on January 18, 1999 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Grimes was last seen at Ken's Wrecking Yard on U.S. Highway 59 North, a business owned by Rodney Wayne Cearley's parents. Initially reported as a missing person, Grimes' disappearance later turned into a murder case.

Rodney Wayne Cearley, 42, was indicted in 2007 following an 18-month investigation by the Texas Rangers' Unsolved Case Unit into the alleged murder of Michael Grimes. Cearley was found guilty of killing Grimes, based upon the defendantís confession to two people.
The motive was related to a fight between Cearley and Grimes. Grimes' body and a murder weapon have never been recovered.
