On the morning of September 21, 1977, the Hamilton children found their father, David Hamilton, dead on the kitchen floor from three gunshot wounds. Their mother, Linda Hamilton, was missing. The couple's car was later found at the entrance of a closed strip mine in view of the truck stop where Linda worked. Prints of a man's boots and Linda's barefeet led from the driver's side. There was no sign of her at the scene.

In 2007, Edward Arthur Surratt confessed to the the murders of David and Linda Hamilton. He will only say that Linda's body is unrecoverable.
