  • Details of Disappearance

Between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., on September 12, 2004, Cody disappeared from his father's home. He was last seen inside his home at midnight after being sent to his room as a punishment.
Local law enforcement authorities were immediately notified by Richard Haynes.
Initial speculations were that Cody left because of unhappiness after being disciplined by his father.
Richard mentioned his son might be trying to get to his mother in Florida, or is at a friend's home.

A search was initiated by local authorities, volunteers and the Kittitas County Search and Rescue Team, with the use of a U.S. Army helicopter.
Posters were circulated and dogs were brought in. Cody's scent was picked up in an area where he usually played, but he was not found.
Family members, neighbors, friends and acquaintances were questioned.

One week after the disappearance of Cody, law enforcement authorities and CPS representatives removed his four sisters from their home.
The girls were placed in foster homes.
A court order had been issued alleging abuse, neglect and lack of supervision.
