Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Gus Hoffman was last seen leaving his parents house at approximately 5:00 p.m. on July 4, 1978 on a recently restored 1966 Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle in San Jose, California.
The bike has never been recovered.
Over the years, his mother had hired private investigators and personally haunted biker bars to chase down leads in the murder. She learned that two motorcycle gang members, Michael Hodges and Michael Stevenson, were seen with him on the day he vanished and he was apparently harassed by them. His mother, while undercover, spoke with an informant who confirmed that he had been tortured and murdered.
Michael Allen Hodges, Richard Morris Dollar and John Michael (Slug) Stelle were found guilty by a Superior Court jury of the first-degree murder of Gus Hoffman in 1990. A fourth suspect, Michael Stevenson, was killed in an unrelated shooting in San Joaquin County in 1986.
Gus Hoffman disappeared while riding his motorcycle in San Jose. The Harley-Davidson attracted the attention of the suspects, court testimony revealed. Hoffman was boxed in by two bikers and a carload of people who escorted him to Stevenson's house. At the house, Hoffman was forced off the motorcycle and murdered by the suspects. Hoffman's body has never been found.
