  • Details of Disappearance
Mary Frances Hunter was last seen by a member outside of her immediate family on Sunday, September 1, 1996 at her residence on board Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor, WA. Mary left behind two children, a husband, her dog, vehicle and a significant amount of money in her bank account. No one has seen or heard from Mary since her disappearance. She was reported missing to the Burlington WA Police Department by her husband on Tuesday September 3, 1996.

She may be wearing cosmetics to cover her skin condition. She likes to read and frequently visits libraries. She is very fond of children and animals, and often worked as a baby sitter. She also likes to hike and enjoys target shooting. She was raised in Mt. Vernon, Washington, near Puget Sound, and is fond of the Seattle area.

On September 2, 2003, Hunter's husband committed suicide. He was the prime suspect in what is now believed to be Mary Hunter's murder. He has been reported to have been obsessively controlling of every aspect of Mary's life.

In his suicide note (one of many), he said that Mary had committed suicide, had held a gun to her head for hours, agonizing. It said Mary had begged him not to tell her family where her body was, that she blamed her parents and older sister for her turmoil. It stated Derek would not divulge the location of her burial.
