  • Details of Disappearance
Richard Joseph Kemp was last seen on June 19, 2009, at his residence in Mission Viejo, at 1 p.m.. He was reported to have boarded the Catalina Express in Dana Point just before 8:00 a.m., en route to Santa Catalina Island. When the boat arrived in Avalon there was no record of Kemp disembarking and his luggage remained unclaimed. His belongings were found on the boat, including his wallet with an identification card, some cash, a cell phone and a backpack containing personal items and clothes. The Orange County Sheriff's Department notified the Coast Guard and a search of the area was initiated.

Kemp lives with his wife in Mission Viejo and has two adult sons. He is believed to have made the trip by himself, calling home Friday morning to tell his family that he was making the trip to Catalina. His family reported him missing later that day after he failed to check in.
