  • Details of Disappearance
Kovack was last seen in Blacksburg, Virginia on September 18, 1998. Rob is believed to have been enroute 5:00-7:00pm Friday, September 18 from Blacksburg, VA to his home near Fairmont, WV. He was planning on attending the WVU-Maryland Game. This was also the weekend of the VTech game at Miami. But his backpack, shaving kit and toothbrush were back in his apartment. A surveillance camera video at Freedom First Credit Union in Blacksburg, Va., showed him withdrawing $80 at 5:21 p.m. that Friday. About 25 minutes later, a fellow student spoke briefly with him on an elevator.

Rob's red Geo Tracker was found in Fayetteville, WV, near the New River Gorge Bridge on Route 19 on September 23, 1998. The vehicle was parked and locked and out of gas. Nothing was missing but the keys. The soft roof had been slit. Investigators found no fingerprints but Kovack's. It may have been stolen from him farther south.

A State Police investigator suggested Kovack jumped from the bridge, but the family had nearly 100 volunteers search twice, and no body was found. His wallet and credit cards remain missing. An extensive search of the area near the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, the New River and Fayette County turned up no clues.

Kovack was a a graduate architecture student at Virginia Tech at the time. He had already landed a job in Fairmont and stayed in close contact with his family while at school.
