Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Evelyn Mackey was last seen on 11-05-1981, at her residence in central Hernando County, Florida. Her new husband, Merl Mackey, told her then-14-year-old daughter that her mother had left to visit a sick relative in Indiana. A week later, he took the daughter to live with her father. But that relative said they never saw Evelyn Mackey, and Hernando officials said she was never seen or heard from again. Her family reported her missing in January 1982.
Merl Mackey was always a suspect in his wife's disappearance, Hernando detectives said, but they lacked the evidence to charge him. For over a year and a half, Merle was interviewed about his missing wife and provided varying accounts. Police believe he killed Laverne Mackey, possibly in in Levy County.
In September 2015, a Levy County grand jury indicted Merl Mackey, 72, for first-degree murder, according to records. He was arrested in New Mexico by the U.S. Marshals Service, and brought to the Levy County Detention Center.
Since his wifeís disappearance, Merle was remarried several times. He made a habit out of exploiting women for financial gain. While in Texas his main source of income was collecting donations for people posed as disabled veterans, which he then pocketed.
The whereabouts of Evelynís body is still unknown.
