Malezhik was last seen walking out of the lobby of her apartment building on the 400 block of Corbin Place in the New
York borough of Brooklyn at 1:00 pm on October 15, 2007. She was carrying a cosmetics bag at the time of her disappearance.
She has never been heard from again. A friend reported her missing on November 8. She left all of her belongings and
    identification behind at home.

A federal jury found Dmitriy Yakovlev, 43, guilty of the murders and identity thefts of Irina Malezhik and Viktor Alekseyev. The remains of Malezhik, a Russian-language translator who lived in Brooklyn and worked in the federal courts, have never been found; Alekseyev disappeared in December 2005, and his body was found in New Jersey in 2006. Yakovlev was also found guilty of stealing the identity of a third Brooklyn resident, Michael Klein, who disappeared in November 2003.
