  • Details of Disappearance
Mr. Morrissey was last seen at approximately 1 am on July 14, 1999 about 16 miles south of Big Falls and 2 miles south of Margie MN on Highway 71. A law enforcement officer came across Mr. Morrissey in a vehicle that was broken down. He refused all help from the officer and stated that his car had done this before, and it would start after it sat for a while. The officer noted that Morrissey had two dogs in the vehicle with him. Mr. Morrissey refused the officer's assistance and use of a cell phone to call a tow truck.

At about 2:30 am, another officer checked on the vehicle and found that Morrissey was not around the vehicle. He noticed that all the windows were shut and he observed a dog in the vehicle. Due to the fact of the extreme heat, the officer took the dog from the unlocked vehicle and bought the dog home to care for it. He also noticed that Mr. Morrissey's wallet on the dash and took that for safe keeping.

At approximately 3 am, a civilian telephoned law enforcement and said that at about 1:15 am a couple had seen a man walking down the middle of the highway and had to swerve sharply to avoid hitting him. When the man was approached, he walked straight towards the car as if wanting to be hit by it. His actions frightened the civilians, so they left he area and telephoned law enforcement. When a state trooper arrived, there was nobody at the scene. The last time anyone was confirmed to see Morrissey, he was walking on the highway wearing no shirt and unknown other clothing.

He has a history of mental illness and has not been taking medication recently. He may be despondent and possibly in an incoherent state of mind. He was possibly picked up by a passing motorist and driven to an unknown location, possibly to Itasca or Beltrami counties or possibly another location.
