Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Kara Nichols, a Colorado Springs, Colorado native and aspiring model, was reported missing on October 9, 2012. Kara’s older brother was attending college in Colorado Springs at the time and he would call his sister nearly every day to see how she was doing. Her brother called and sent text messages to his sister on October 10 and 11. Kara didn’t answer her cell phone. On October 12 her brother contacted the police.
At the time of her disappearance, the then 19-year-old was en route from her home to Denver for a modeling shoot. Nichols lived in a small Colorado Springs home with three men she was renting a room from. Two of the men were on a trip out of town. Tara told the youngest of her roommates that a girlfriend was going to pick her up for the modeling gig. Minutes later he saw a dark sedan pulling away from the home and assumed that Kara’s ride had arrived.
Most of Kara’s belongings were still in the room she rented including her clothes, makeup, her flat iron for doing her hair and other prized possessions including stuffed animals. She had been struggling financially but had also left money behind.
Kara has not been seen since then and has not contacted her mother or any of her friends since that day. The last text messages written on her cellular phone were made just before midnight on October 9, 2012, the day she disappeared. The sheriff’s investigation determined that Kara’s cellular phone had been moving north in the direction of Denver late Oct. 9, 2012, according to pinging off of cellular towers. The cellular phone has never been found.
Because of the unusual circumstances a police investigation began around the middle of October of 2012. Investigators suspect someone posing as a photographer may have harmed her.
Police discovered that Kara was involved in drugs and prostitution.
Kara advertised her availability as a lingerie model on a website called Model Mayhem. A week after a news conference, Kara Nichols’s photograph turned up on a Las Vegas website offering escorts. But it was not posted by the missing 19-year-old, a spokesman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department said.
According to Kara's family Kara was always a very social person, and it would be extremely out of character for her not to contact family or friends, unless she were somehow unable to do so. Foul play is suspected.
