Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Deborah’s husband Marvin reported her missing on 11-21-1978. Marvin left their residence and said Deborah was at home when he left on the morning of 11-19-1978. Deborah had prior history of leaving the house for short periods of time but always remained in contact with her children.
In March 2015 Marvin Owens pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the 1978 death and disappearance of his wife, Deborah Owens, in Oroville. Deborah Owens' body was never found. Owens admitted to strangling his wife Deborah Owens on November 19, 1978.
Owens told investigators he buried Deborah's body in the Oroville Wildlife Refuge. Authorities have searched the area, but have yet to locate her remains. Marvin Owens later moved to Nebraska, where he was arrested on a murder charge in February 2015.
Investigators were also working to determine if Owens has any involvement in the disappearance of another Oroville woman. Essie Hiett disappeared in February 1978, a few months before Deborah Owens went missing. Investigators believe an in-law of Owens is responsible for her disappearance.
