Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Yolanda was last seen July 13, 1995, checking in to a Portland motel, a few miles from the home she shared with her mother and two-year-old son. The next day her son was found unharmed, locked inside her car, near a bus-depot. A wake-up call to her room went unanswered, and the maid found a blood-soaked mattress, missing the sheets and blankets.
Panek's ex-boyfriend, Abdur Rashid Al-Wadud, was convicted for her murder. He is believed to have killed her in front of their child.
Evidence included blood found in hotel room where Yolanda was registered, and Al-Wadud made a 911 call from the area while denying being there.
After the birth of their child, Yolanda filed a restraining order against Al-Wadud, saying she feared for her life. She said he had tried to strangle her.
Panek's body has not been recovered. She was a teacher of science and math at the Northeast YWCA at the time.
