  • Details of Disappearance
Pennington was last seen leaving her family's residence on Orchard Drive in Montville, Connecticut during the early morning hours of May 29, 1996. She may have been carrying a black duffel bag at the time of her disappearance, but her purse and most of her personal belongings were left behind.

George Leniart was convicted by a jury in March 2010, of capital felony and murder in the death of April Dawn Pennington. The jury found that Leniart killed Pennington on May 29, 1996. Authorities say the teen left her home that night to meet with Leniart, who was 30 at the time. Leniart was arrested in 2008 after authorities say he confessed to his prison cellmate he killed her and dumped her body in the ocean in Rhode Island. Leniart told his cellmate he took the body to a fishing boat in Rhode Island, chopped it up, and dumped it in the water.
