Details of Disappearance
Susan was last seen by family and friends on December 6, 2009 and her husband shortly after midnight on the 7th of December. Her purse and cellphone were found at the home. Police were called on the morning of December 7th when Susanís childcare provider became concerned that Susan did not drop her children off as scheduled.
It was soon discovered that both Susan and her husband Joshua failed to report for work at their respective jobs. When no one could reach Susan or Joshua, police searched the family home, fearing that the family may have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. No one was in the home.
Joshua Powell eventually returned to the residence later that evening with the two children, but Susan remains missing. Joshua claimed that he took the two children camping at about midnight the night before, leaving Susan asleep or preparing for bed. Authorities found blood in the family home and a hand-written note in which Susan expressed fear about her husband and her potential demise. Investigators had found a gas can, tarps and a shovel in Josh Powell's vehicle shortly after the investigation began. One of the children told investigators that his mother had gone on the camping trip but did not come home with them.
Foul play is suspected in her case. Josh Powell long has been considered a person of interest in his wife's disappearance. He denies harming his wife and has not been arrested or charged. He has said he believes his wife ran off with another man. Susan Powell's family has said Joshua Powell was abusive and controlling.
In 2011, West Valley City police detectives spent two days searching abandoned mines in the mountain desert around Ely, Nevada. The location was about 235 miles southwest of the Powells' home in West Valley City, Utah. Investigators found no remains and no evidence was taken from the mines.
Josh Powell and his two young sons were killed in a house explosion in 2011, moments after the boys arrived for a visit that was supposed to be supervised by a social worker. Josh Powell locked his front door in the face of a social worker, then used a hatchet on his boys inside and torched the home. The children, 5 and 7, had been living with Susan Powell's parents since Josh Powell's father Steven was arrested on child porn and voyeurism charges. A judge had denied an attempt by Josh Powell to regain custody.
