Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Carl and his wife Debra, were sightseeing in Big Smoky Valley, east of State Highway 376. His car ran out of gas in the desert, so he and his wife left the vehicle and attempted to hike to the main road in search of a gas station. They had no provisions, and temperatures reached about 125 degrees during that time period. His wife was found in a delirious state two days later.
Searchers found the shirt, cutoffs and one shoe Sanders was wearing as he walked through the desert. It is common for heatstroke victims to remove their clothing. However, foul play has not been ruled out. California authorities are assisting with the investigation.
