Details of Disappearance
Charleston County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a Johns Island murder from the 1990s that only recently came to light through a prison tip, Sheriff Al Cannon said. Cannon said his office was recently contacted after a prison inmate in Georgia told authorities her uncle had killed her grandfather, David Shand, about 20 years ago. David Shand, a military veteran who had worked in the billiards trade, has not been seen since 1992, but no one had filed a missing person’s report or expressed alarm at his prolonged absence. Multiple stories regarding his absence have been told over the years by Shand's wife and son, Jason, who died in a car accident in 2005. Deputies visited the home in 2013 and also served a search warrant, where they found blood. Eventually, Phyllis Shand told deputies she believed her son had killed her husband after her husband had been abusive and held her at gunpoint for three days.
Phyllis Shand was arrested and released on an obstruction of justice charge. Authorities continue to search for David Shand's remains.
