Details of Disappearance
Candice Shields was last seen the night of December 10, 2011 at the home she shared with her grandparents in Graham. When Candice's grandfather got up in the night he saw that Candice was gone and the back door was unlocked. Police say her cellphone records indicate her phone was used to make a call from the home at around 2:30am on December 11. The phone and all of Ms Shields' belongings were left behind at the residence. She did not own a car, and police say she had no known mode of transportation.
Ms Shields, who has a one-year-old son, and is four months pregnant with her second child, was reported missing by her family on December 15 at 1:18pm.
Ms Shields had no known history of substance abuse or mental health issues.
Jeremy Thornburg of Sweetwater, her ex-boyfriend, was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting Shields. Thornburg's new girlfriend turned him in to police after he assaulted her. After going to the police station, she told police about a gun in Thornburg's possession that he told her he used on Shields. Shields DNA was found on the gun. His ex-girlfriend said Thornburg told her he shot Shields multiple times before pouring bleach on her body. Thornburg's brother also testified that Jeremy Thornburg told him in a private conversation that he had shot Shields. Thornburg had traveled to Graham on the night of the disappearance and met at Candice Shields residence in Graham. Shields then left the residence with Thornburg in the early hours on December 11, 2011, and was never seen again. Her body was never found.
