Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
Details of Disappearance
Walter was last seen in his rural mobile home community on Delchar Drive in Edinburgh, IN. Smith was spotted confronting a man from his neighborhood at a bar on U.S. 31, possibly over some stolen checks that the man found to have cashed. The man later went to prison, but not for stealing Smith’s checks.
Neighbors said they spotted someone with a flashlight searching through Smith’s house in Flat Rock after he disappeared.
His vehicle, described as a black 2000 Daewoo Laganza, was located abandoned approximately two months later on the north side of Franklin, IN,
it had been impounded by then. A witness reported watching three men walking away from the vehicle.
There was no sign of struggle and all of his personal belongings were left behind. Friends say he would not have left behind his house, his dog or his restaurant.
He vanished just two days before he was scheduled to open a new restaurant called "Walter's Family restaurant" in downtown Edinburgh.
Foul play is suspected.
