On the morning of September 9, 1973, Wally Somers, an avid and experienced hiker, wrote on the blackboard where he was going, parked his car at the trailhead of Sloan's Peak, and disappeared. Mountain search and rescue teams came to the conclusion that Wally had likely lost his balance and fell into a crevasse somewhere during the 6000 foot climb. His children climbed the same mountain in 2013 to honor their father's memory.
