Details of Disappearance
Turner moved to the Golden Hill area of San Diego, California on April 21, 2002. He lived with his mother, Tameka Jones, and stepfather Tieray Dewayne Jones in United States military housing. Tameka was a sailor in the US Navy at the time and was deployed aboard the USS Rushmore while Tieray tended to Turner. Turner's biological father, Tramane Sampson, lived in Frederick, Maryland and was released from prison shortly before April 2002.
Tieray told authorities that he and Turner visited Balboa Park in the Golden Hill area near 28th Street and Cedar Street on April 25, 2002. Tieray said that he left Turner near the sandbox while he purchased a soda from a nearby vending machine. Tieray stated that a woman and two children were near the area at the time. He claimed that Turner had vanished by the time he returned. Turner has never been heard from again.
The boy's disappearance prompted weeks of intensive searches, including an extensive sweep of the Miramar Landfill. The boy's body has never been found. Foul play is suspected.
Tieray D. Jones, 37, was arrested by U.S. Marshals and police officers in Raleigh, North Carolina in April 2016, on charges of murder and child abuse causing death. Jones pleaded not guilty to murder and child abuse charges. He faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted in the death of 2-year-old Jahi Turner.
Jones has an extensive criminal record, including convictions for assault with a firearm, trespassing and drug cases, and served a five-year prison sentence in Maryland.
