Carla was last seen by friends at approximately 2:00am at at the Adega Bar and Grill in the vicinity of the 100 block of Ferry Street in Newark, NJ. Near closing time, around 3 a.m., Vicentini allegedly told her friend she was going to the man's car to look at a photo and to talk. Other witnesses saw Carla walk home alone from the bar.
It is possible she returned to her residence on Ferry Street, near the restaurant. The Hugo Boss jacket she was seen wearing was found in her apartment. All of Carla's belongings, including her passport, turned up there. The apartment's owner was questioned. No incriminating evidence was found in the apartment. No sign of forced entry.
Carla is Brazilian and her family lives in the small agricultural town Goioere in Brazil. She had been in USA for a month before she disappeared. She came for a five-month stay as a cultural exchange student.
When Carla Vicentini first arrived in New Jersey, she shared a motel room in Dover with three women on the same work program. She got a job at a White Castle restaurant, but after two weeks in the cramped quarters decided to move to Newark and stay in the Ferry Street apartment of a family friend. Vicentini had just started a job at the Mediterranean Manor in the Ironbound. Vicentini speaks little English. She was an engineering student at the time.
