Details of Disappearance
Randy Ward, who was 58 at the time, left his Eden Prairie, MN home on June 21, 2011 on an Indian Motorcycle to Fort Lauderdale, FL. His family was unaware of his plans. He rented a 24-foot Hurricane Sundeck boat from the Bahia Mar Resort & Yachting Center marina in Fort Lauderdale about 9 a.m. on Tuesday June 26, 2011, according to the Coast Guard. About 10 p.m., a marina employee called authorities to say he was supposed to return by 7 p.m. but never s howed up. Several Coast Guard crews launched a search and found the rented boat floating about 7 miles off the coast of Lake Worth, Florida about 1 a.m., according to Fort Lauderdale Police. The boat appeared to have some mechanical problems, & authorities said a rope was wrapped around the propeller. Randy was the kind of guy who would jump in the water to try to fix it. He had a very good knowledge of motor mechanics & could have possibly used this situation to stage a disappearance. Randy is a good swimmer who could tread water for a long time and who owned several boats over the years, he also did some scuba diving when he was young. A marina employee said Randy had rented a boat on Monday morning and returned safely that evening. He returned the next day & rented the boat again on June 28 & didn't return with it. A rental car he was using was found parked in the parking lot.
