  • Details of Disappearance
    Watanabe, an exchange student from Japan, went on her daily walk from her host family's home in Pupukea, North Shore, Oahu. She never returned.  
    Police arrested 22-year-old Kirk Lankford for the murder of the missing Japanese visitor. Police recovered Watanabe's DNA from the Hauoli Pest Control truck that Lankford allegedly drove, court records show. Eyeglasses also recovered from the truck allegedly matched Watanabe's prescription pair. 
    During the court proceeding, Lankford said that he put Miss Watanabe's body in the ocean at a shoreline spot near Kualoa Ranch.  
    He was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to life.
