  • Details of Disappearance
    Michael was last seen playing in the yard of his home in Fort Jackson on April 23, 1972. Michael was the son of Major Joe Woodward, the staff judge advocate on post. Michael disappeared while his father was mowing the grass.

    A search party of more than 400 soldiers, volunteers on horseback, on motorcycles and in jeeps, and three helicopters took part in the massive search initially. Despite national attention, Michael was never found.

    Michaelís parents are no longer alive, but investigators have been working with other family members who remain hopeful about getting closure.
